Amala Akkineni is a South Indian actress and prominent animal rights activist. She has mainly worked in Tamil movies, as well as Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada Hindi movies. Amala has also acted in some independent films made by Bongalie Billingham. A committed vegetarian, Amala has also helped to promote the rights of farm animals in Kerala. In her early days, Amala was an advocate for the rights of farm animals, and she once even demanded that Congressmen leave the House to protest against the killing of animals at animal farms.
Amala Akkineni’s real name is Ananda Akkineni. She is a popular South Indian celebrity and is better known by her first name. She goes by the name Amala throughout her career, but according to some sources, her real name is Ananda. Some sources also say that her real name is adapted from an amalgamation of two Sanskrit words – “agna” meaning beautiful and “na” meaning nature.

Amala Akkineni rose to prominence in the late sixties, when she was arrested along with other civil activists by the Central government for their participation in what was termed the agitation for fair trade. The main charge against them was that they were peacefully participating in a public action organised by the People’s Revolutionary Council of India or the PRC. Akkineni was the face of that public action. After her arrest, she formed the Popular Students’ Organization (PVO) that fought for economic rights for the farmers of Kerala.
Amala Akkineni has made innumerable films and acted in a number of Indian and international films. Most notable of these are Kannan, Vaantham, Bhumika in Tamil and Priyadarshan in Telugu. She has also portrayed characters in Bollywood movies such as Peer Gyi Menon in Laha and Jai Krishna in Devarajya.
Amala Akkineni was conferred with the Best Outstanding Actress award at the second National Awards of the National Association of Film Commissioners and the first Indian Film Awards of the year at the 65th National Awards of the World Entertainment Awards. She later received the same award for the third time at the International Critics’ Festival in Singapore. She was also the recipient of the Best Actor award for the same category at the Foreign Film Oscar Awards 2021. She has also won accolades at various other film festivals and ceremonies including the Golden Globes and the Satellite Awards.
It is believed that Amala Akkineni might be related to Rana Yacuna, another famous Hyderabad-based actor. However, this is yet to be confirmed. The similarities between the two are just enough to make Amala Akkineni a prominent force in Malayalam cinema. She is a fiery activist who uses her acting skills to further her causes.
