Ana Alicia Cortez was born in Mexica, Mexico, the daughter of an English father and a Hispanic mother. Ana was often scolded as a child for speaking her own language (Spanish) and for her physical resemblance to her older sister. This often made her very unhappy and made her want to give up speaking Spanish when she was eleven years old.

Ana Alicia was born in Mexico City, the country of her birth. When Ana was young, her parents decided that they would send her to live in New York City, because of the greater influence there. She had long been interested in acting and in particular, wanted to be an actress and play the role of Rose in the Broadway musical Cats, in which she would again star alongside Idgie eventually. However, her heart was set on becoming a star in telenovelas instead, so in December of 1956, she moved to Mexico City to study with Alejo Sampedro.
