Annette Charles was a beloved American actress best known for her performances on stage and screen. She had notable roles in such movies as Rosemary, Grease, Traffic and movies like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Born in Harlem in 1933, she was one of four black children who lived in Manhattan at that time. Her family was prosperous and they attended church regularly. Annette grew up in what was then segregationist New York City and was very aware of the differences in treatment of blacks in that city.
Annette Charles passed away in 2021 in Los Angeles, California. She was just 65. Annette loved her children but sometimes they put her down because she did not always live life to the fullest. She was also an avid fan of the Academy Awards and even appeared at a handful of ceremonies over the years.

Annette’s best-known role was in the movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. She played Ginger, the beautiful girl who runs the shop where the main characters of the movie shop, Ted and Candy meet. As it turns out, Ginger is the owner of a jewelry shop called The Golden Apple, which has an unlimited supply of antique jewelry that Ted purchases. This is where the story of their friendship begins. It is clear from the beginning that Ginger wants Ted to succeed, so she plots to get him to go to college with her. When Annette Charles dies in the movie, her son goes to college with her and they spend a lot of time together.
As it turns out, Charles wasn’t exactly an actress best known for her role as Ginger in the 1978 film Grease. In fact, she was an even better-known actress in her native England. It was her performance as the evil Queen in the BBC series “Queen Elizabeth the third” that truly defined her as an actress of distinction.
Charles’ birthplace, Los Angeles, is home to a number of notable people, including the singer Janet Jackson, the former skateboarder Tony Hawk, the author William S. Burroughs, the musician John Lennon, the actor George C. Scott, and the model Ann Demeulemeester. Among the many prominent figures who can be found in and around the city of Los Angeles, it is almost certain that one of them was Annette Charles. When you look up the Internet search term “Ann Demeulemeester,” “Annelies Charles,” or “Ance Charles,” there will be lots of results. If you don’t find her name in these results, you should keep looking until you discover this actress who is almost as popular in Los Angeles as Angelina Jolie is.
Annette Charles has always maintained a very close relationship with her native northridge. Her son, Mark, now works as a car salesman for a company called Cardshark, as do her daughters, Lee and Ruth. You can find Annette Charles performing some of her best-known acting roles today, both in the small theater scene in Santa Monica, and on television. Her contribution to the world of theater is well-deserved and she is one of the few celebrities who can legitimately claim that.
