Archana’s love for films started during the late eighties, when she saw Mani in its entirety for the first time. She was fascinated by the melodious dialogues, the painterly paintings, and the epic scale that these films were shooting in. This made her want to work on music videos and small films as well. However, it was her stint in Telugu films that really whetted her appetite for becoming a full-time actress.
Archana was married to S.S. Mani from a previous marriage, and the couple had three daughters. Archana was also nominated for an Oscar for her contribution to the hit action/adventure series kicks, as well as her performance in the animated science fiction movie “Robot Carnival”.
However, it was her role in the hit Bengali movie “Kismet” that really won her over. In this film, Archana stars as Dora, a young woman who is orphaned following a plane crash. She ends up at a boarding school run by the Ngai Orishtlin, where she is devastated by the sight of her dead mother. Although she eventually falls in love with an older man, she is unable to pursue the relationship due to her upcoming wedding. The film also chronicles her rise to become one of the best martial arts experts in the city.
Archana’s Bengali films did not receive the recognition they deserved at the time, and some people have even accused her of merely playing the fool. However, with time, she began to receive critical acclaim for her performances. She finally received the honors she deserved for her contribution to the genre, when she was finally given a Best Actress award at the 1996 Satellite Awards. Apart from her acting accolade, she also was nominated for the first time for the lead role in the science fiction action film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” in the year 1997. Other notable awards for Archana include winning the Golden Palm at the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival, the Best Screenplay Award at the 1997 MTV Asia Music Awards, as well as the Satellite Awards for Outstanding Actress in the Television Series -presented by CNN.
