Ashanti, also known as Ashanti Campbell was born in Glen Cove, New York and is an entertainer known by the stage name Ashanti Sheqo. Born as Ashanti Campbell in Glen Cove, she grew up in Southern California and became famous as a member of the Sheqo Mafia with boyfriend Larry Dibley. She had a string of hits in the seventies and eighties such as “Blue Hawaii”, “Lilith” and “Come As You Are”. She has also had a number of guest spots on television shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Smallville.
Ashanti was raised in Southern California as the daughter of an American pop star. The family moved to Ohio when Ashanti was about four years old and remained there until they returned to Glen Cove. She later moved back to Southern California and again gained fame in the music industry playing a variety of instruments. As an entertainer, she is known for her vocal abilities, however Ashanti claims that her greatest asset is her beautiful voice which she uses frequently in all sorts of singing styles including country, rockabilly and gospel music.

Ashanti was discovered by her then husband Larry Sheqoi who signed her to RCA Records and released her first album “From This Moment”. In 1977 she released her second album “Out of Town”. The album achieved moderate success and was once again signed to RCA and released another album “Back to Ashanti” in 1980. She went on to have seven more albums throughout the decade with her name coming out on the charts including “Carry Your Flag” and “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles”. In 1992 she was one of the many celebrities who appeared in a commercial for the then popular television series “agus tuck”.
Ashanti also had a chance to be on the famous soap opera “Christine”. She finally ended up having a role on the television show “Welcome Back Kotter” as the mother of twin children. Her most successful film role would be a voice role in the award winning feature film “A Christmas Story”. Ashanti’s role would be that of the sarcastic yet loving Christmas girl in the film who has a brother who is an alcoholic.
Ashanti’s musical career did not end in the early 1990s with the release of her self titled album “Carnival”. She followed this up with singles “Give Me The Reason” and “Christmas”. In 1997 she released her third album “Love in a Second Life” which was met with critical acclaim.
Ashanti finally released her fourth studio album, “You’re Never Too Young” in 2021. Prior to this she had not released an album since the early nineties. She made four singles off of this album including “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Don’t Play Your cards Right”. A year later she was back in the news when it was announced that she had signed deals with both Virgin and Def Jam. This new record label was started by Jay-Z and was released on Virgin Records.
