Cher was born on August 8, 1924 in New York City. Her birth name is Cherry LaPere. She was named after her great-grandmother, who was a Black American woman who helped to raise Cher and taught her many of her most cherished childhood memories. Cher was named after her great-grandparents, and has kept that name throughout her life, even though her real first name is Fay Weldon.
Cher was named “Cherry” because as a very young child, her grandmother would dress her in red so that everyone could see her black rose tattoo on her shoulder. This led Cher to believe that if she grew up and became a singer, she would have to get that tattoo on her shoulder. Her great grandmother died when Cher was four, and she felt like she had to get this tattoo in order to look like her great grandma. This is the reason that Cher began to develop the image of the black rose tattoo on her shoulder as the symbol of who she really was.

As a child, Cher was extremely talented, drawing much attention from people of all ages for her songs and dancing. She went on to play several instruments, including the piano and the harmonica, and became known as one of the greatest female performers of her time. Cher was also a member of the Delta Team, an all-girl group that made quite an impression on both the public and music industry in the early to mid nineteen hundreds. Cher and her partner, Larry Graham, had just formed a popular duo called Cher and the Blue Roses, along with their band, Blondie.
After working with the Delta Team for a few years, Cher wanted to get out on her own, and she did, with her first single, “Iris.” She followed that up by creating her very own band, called Cher with the Exotic Frasier. She wrote most of the songs for this band and even sang some of them, as well as doing several instrumentals. Her first solo single was a cover of the Old McDonald song “Where Has My Little Dog Gone.”
After her career with the Delta Team, Cher decided that she wanted to try her hand at something a little more different than what she had been doing up to this point, and that would be signing to MCA Records. “I knew that there were a lot of girls out there that could turn back time,” Cher told interviewer Sam Raimi in Live and Funny, “so I just kind of went for it.” Cher released her first single off of this album, “Irene,” which went very well, and then went on to score two other number one hits.
With Cher’s first successful recording, Cher proved once again that she had what it takes to go the distance when it came to songwriting and establishing a personal style that would become important to her fans for decades to come. Cher is an amazing woman, with a beautiful voice that will take you into another world, yet another world to experience. Cher is still going strong with a line of singles that are all enjoying great success, and another new album is fast approaching. Cher is definitely an artist that has achieved more than most women ever will in their entire lifetime. Cher’s new album will no doubt prove to you just why she is the best female artist of all time.
