Grace Gummer grew up in an energetic family in which her mother, a talented writer, performed stand-up comedy whenever Grace needed a pick-me-up. Her father, a renowned theatre director, gave Grace regular doses of her mother’s jokes and observations and encouraged her in many of the artistic and writing activities that she enjoyed. Grace Gummer studied acting at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1998, but did not get any theatre experience until she began working on a Broadway play after play. After five years on the Broadway stage, and several more off Broadway appearances, she finally received her first American theatre break when she was cast opposite original musical favourite Marily Oppenheimer in the revival of “Fiddler on the Roof”, a play that ultimately went on to become one of the longest running shows in history.
Grace Gummer returned to Broadway in the following year’s production of “Hairspray” for a second season. Then she completed the role of “Malibu” in the second season of the hit television series CSI, playing the title role for the second year in a row. Grace Gummer then landed herself a role on the long-running soap opera The Mentalist opposite Tom Selleck, playing the cynical, socially inept therapist, psychiatrist and therapist, respectively.
