Lee began to hone her acting skills when she was just twenty years old, after getting some small part in a Singapore film called The Man With One Red Shoe. After that she went on to play the lead role in the award winning movie, Dumb and Dumber. While those two films helped her to build up some experience, it was a combination of roles in other movies that really helped to launch her into stardom in Singapore. Her first major role in a movie came in the comedy Kung Fu Panda, which she starred in alongside stars like Matt Damon and Evander Holyfield.
Today, Ivy Lee is known for her many films, plays, and TV appearances. She is well known for her lovable character, Miss Daisy, in the remake of the movie Beauty and the Beast. She also appeared in the TV series L. J. Smith: Made In America, as herself, and The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. It is her appearance in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean that really kicked off the Hong Kong star search. In that film, she played the character of Queequeg, who ends up with the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.
Since then Ivy Lee has been involved in a lot of popular projects, most notably the Harry Potter series, and she has always expressed strong opinions about the British colonialists during the times of her life. Her love of the book and her association with the British made her a natural candidate to perform at a commemoration for the British suffragettes in August of 2012. Her performance of Lee Strasberg in the film, A Raisin in the Stocking Island, earned her critical acclaim in the United Kingdom and around the world. Her strong opinions on China and her support of the imprisoned Tibetan leader, Dalai Lama, caused her to be banned from entering the country for a year. Now as an American citizen, she has expressed her support for the Tibetan independence movement and is urging the Chinese government to release the Dalai Lama.
Her love of music and her association with the blues are also behind the reasons why Ivy Lee has achieved so much success in her career. She is known to play the piano since childhood, even studying classical music when she was young. Her musical interests have spanned various genres, and she has even performed with the blues musicians, the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Temptations, and many others. Her work as an actress ranges from small roles in TV shows to major roles in movies. Her most successful role to date, however, is that of Aunt Polly in the film, A Walk Like a Deer.
