Pearl Bailey is an American singer-actor-dancer famous for her Broadway appearances and movies. Born in Spring, 1918, Pearl Bailey was named after her maternal grandmother. She grew up in Newport News, Virginia, where her father worked as a surveyor. At the age of fifteen, Bailey started her stage career by appearing at an amateur competition at an outdoor auditorium in Philadelphia. During this performance, she impressed the judges with her vocal range and ability to sing and dance beautifully. Pearl Bailey moved to New York City in 1920, where she enjoyed a great success in both film and theatre work. After a string of film and theatre appearances in the early part of the decade, she developed a passion for performing, which resulted in such popular and long-running shows as “That Mickey Mantle Show” and “The Set Up.” Later, she decided to concentrate on her vocal talent and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to hone her skills. During this time, her contract with Joffrey’s Warblers was set to expire, but she was persuaded to remain for one more season.
