This novel is considered one of the bests of the genre. It takes a journey through the life of the main character, V.R. Karunakaran. It shows her early years in India and her association with prominent personalities. It also depicts her later years in which she established a prosperous business in textile manufacturing in Kanyakumari.

This novel is structured in three parts. Part one titled Liva Nivu includes a short account of V.R. ‘s childhood in which her mother is narrating her experiences in Vadivukkara. Liva Nivu also includes her marriage and the birth of her first child in that city. The second part of the book is dedicated to V.R. ‘s life in Kanyakumari where she gives a detailed description of her early days there and her association with other people from her village. She also provides a description of her residence and the houseboat where she took care of her handicapped and sick relatives.

The third and last part of Liva Nivu relates the experiences of V.R. in her later years, her marriage and the birth of a daughter in that same town. Though the book portrays V.R. ‘s early years, it does not linger too much on that time as it does on the present. Though V.R. expresses her sorrow for the death of her husband at the end of the novel, she expresses happiness for having married a man who loved her despite her handicaps.

This book is a short stories collection. V.R. tells her story fast and in short stories – the kind of stories that make you feel that V.R. has not aged, even though her years have long passed. Vadivukkarsa is a quick read. In fact, I found it to be faster than most novels written by the same author. I recommend this book to readers who have not yet read any of Vasavad’s other books.
