Lin Youyi is not an actor, but an actress first and foremost. She was nominated for the best actress award at the 2021 MTV Movie Awards. At the time, this marks only the second time that an Asian woman has been nominated for an award at such a prestigious award show. She has also gained widespread popularity in Singapore as the face of independent film distribution company distributors Productions. S productions’ most successful release to date, Youyi, was released in May of this year. In addition to her role as a news reporter, Lin appeared in a few advertisements for different Singaporean companies. Most of these appearances were for small business owners.
Youyi was born in Kampong Glam, a small district located in the northern part of Singapore. She was also born in China, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan. In her early life, she was thought to be a Japanese. Youyi grew up in Singapore, in a house called Little India, near the Bukit Timah area.
Youyi’s first and most notable acting role was in the film Kung Mangaroo. She had previously appeared in television shows such as Koffi Man (Kung Fu), wherein she played the role of a female ninja. Youyi then appeared in the TV movie The Perfect Pair (2021), in which she played the daughter of a Chinese dissenter. The late Steve Martin, who is now deceased, made an appearance on stage with her in the film Man on the Moon (2021). Youyi is also credited as one of the models for the template message in the first Google advertisement that the search giant used for its homepage.
Youyi’s most well-known film roles include the films The Dog Eat Man (2021) and Rounders (also with Simon Peake). Her multiple award nominations throughout the years have earned her the reputation of being one of the best presenters in Singapore and Asia. It is rare to see a female presenter win so many awards, but since Singapore is still relatively new, it is unlikely that such accolades will continue to come. Perhaps, female presenter will be more common in the coming years. Youyi is currently contracted to Universal Pictures, but has not disclosed what projects she will be involved in.
Youyi’s two film appearances were particularly noteworthy because they occurred at the same time as her winning performance in the best current affairs presenter role at the 2021 awards ceremony. Youyi took home the award for the best current affairs presenter for her reporting of the Iraq War. Two months later, she was also nominated for the same award for her reporting of the flooding in Singapore and northern Thailand. The flood damaged or destroyed much of the tourism industry, making it difficult to find a hotel in the region. Youyi was also a contributing writer for Time magazine’s Asian edition.
Youyi’s next public appearance will be at the International Awards Ceremony taking place in Singapore in the month of April. Youyi’s performance this year made her one of the best presenters in the field and she is certainly the tip of the iceberg when it comes to presenting news. Her charming manner, friendly approach and engaging personality have made her a popular choice among viewers and a favorite presenter for viewers at home and abroad. Youyi Live will continue to entertain and entice through her insightful personal life stories and public speaking.
